In the vast oceans, there are many mysterious and unique creatures, one of which is the starfish.
Despite often being classified as fish in our imagination, starfish possess biological characteristics and habits that are quite different from those of familiar fish.
Let's uncover the veil of this mysterious creature together!
1. Starfish are not fish
Although they are often classified as marine creatures, starfish belong to the phylum Echinodermata, not to fish. Unlike fish, starfish lack gills, fins, or a vertebral column.
2. Unique body structure
The body structure of starfish is highly distinctive. They consist of a central disk and extending arms, typically resembling a five-pointed star, although some species have more arms, and some even have just three.
3. Breathing mechanism
Starfish do not breathe through gills but exchange gases through their skin surface. They utilize small tube feet on their body surface to absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.
4. Gravity sensors
Starfish possess a structure called the "water vascular system" within their bodies, which is a network of tube feet similar to water pipes that help them sense the direction of gravity. This special sensory organ aids them in finding food and orienting themselves on the seabed.
5. Nocturnal behavior
Most starfish are nocturnal animals, being more active at night for feeding and reproduction. During the day, they usually hide under rocks, coral, or sandy seabeds.
6. Predators: Sea Snakes
Despite their relatively good survival abilities in the ocean, starfish also have predators. One of them is the sea snake, which preys on starfish, especially larger species within the family Hydrophiidae.
7. Food sources
Starfish primarily feed on benthic animals, carrion, and detritus. Their diet is quite diverse, including mollusks, worms, sea urchins, and other small marine organisms.
8. Remarkable regeneration ability
Starfish possess astonishing regenerative abilities. If a starfish loses one or more arms, it can regenerate new ones. Some starfish can even regenerate into two separate individuals when split in half, with each half growing into a new body.
9. Solitary lifestyle
Most starfish are solitary creatures, typically engaging in solitary activities rather than forming groups. Although sometimes you may see a group of starfish clustered together, they often lack clear social connections among them.
10. Reproduction methods
Starfish have various reproductive methods, including sexual and asexual reproduction. Some reproduce sexually by releasing sperm and eggs, while others can reproduce asexually through fission or releasing swimming larvae.
11. Survival threats
Despite appearing relatively common in the natural world, starfish still face survival threats. Environmental pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction all pose threats to the survival of starfish. Protecting marine ecosystems is crucial for maintaining the health of starfish and their ecosystems.
The survival strategies and ecological roles of starfish are fascinating. By revealing these secrets, we can better understand and protect these valuable biological resources.
